Dear Washington DC Auto Glass,
I used to notice this small chip on my auto glass. I figured that it was very small and not in my line of vision so I just let it be. I figured that I would get it fixed the next time I needed my car tuned or something else happened. Now, the chip is not there, but is has been replaced with a huge crack. The crack is very large and I have to get it fixed now. I just do not understand where it came from. It seems almost like something may have hit my car that I did not notice in the exact same spot as the original chip. That story though seems a little off. Can you please explain what may have happened to my auto glass? I just want to understand what could have happened for this small chip to become such a large crack suddenly. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you so much for all of your help.
Dear Too Late Customer,
The chances of something hitting your windshield in the exact spot as that small chip is slim to none. On top of that, if the crack is as big as you are saying it is then you probably would have noticed something hitting your auto glass. Most likely, the reason you have this large crack on your auto glass now is because you never got that so called small chip fixed in a timely manner.
You are actually supposed to get any type of chip, no matter what the size, repaired as soon as possible. Since you did not do so, it turned into a large crack. This may have happened due to many different reasons. One is from other debris and the outside elements hitting it. If water and dirt were to get into the chip, it will most likely start to expand after awhile. Since the chip was so small, it really has no place to go. Because of this, it makes the chip grow in size. This can also happen if your auto glass is out in the hot sun for hours on end. Heat will make your auto glass expand. With a chip in the glass, it will start to expand and crack the rest of the windshield. Also, the vibrations of just closing your trunk, hood, or doors could cause it to grow.
As you can see, there are a ton of reasons why this small chip could have grown into a very large crack. The worst part is that instead of having some small repair job done, you will most likely need to get your entire auto glass replaced. This will take much more time to do and cost you a lot more money. Now you know, the next time you notice some small chip on your auto glass, you will get it fixed as soon as you have the time.
